What anime to you is just painfully average?

I think we all have that one anime that we just think is a textbook definition of mediocre. You don't think it's bad but you wouldn't call it good either. What is that show for you?

For me it is Youjo Senki. Everything about this anime to me is just average to me. Nothing about this show other than it's plot really stands out to me but I wouldn't call it bad either.

Is average just another word for generic in this case? I'd say Blue Exorcist.

I thought Evangelion was pretty average, I think I'm in the minority with that opinion though.
The criteria I use when rating shows is on my profile.

This one easily. I think it's actually the only romance anime where I felt nothing at all while watching it. It doesn't even have a screaming shrimp that will make you hate the story.

chihayafuru-At beginning I really liked it but as I go,it became less to least interesting.
But yeah at least it was watchable.

I didn't like Black Lagoon. The action was good, but it didn't really have an overarching story other than the characters' daily jobs going south. The backstories of the characters also weren't explored very much other than Revy (based on the amount of episodes I watched).

When we talk about romances, then Say I love you, Tada-kun never falls in live and My little monster were the embodimemt of average in my eyes.
Tho I actually like Ao Haru Ride. Not that it's great, but I like it.

Akame ga Kill every character is a different cliche.

Isekai Cheat Magician, it is the most cliche anime ever, other isekais try to put some effort but this one no.

I also think Zero no Tsukaima has aged really badly. Since watching it in 2020 it feels like the most generic harem ever since it came out during a time where it pretty much popularized a lot of those trope.

I consider those I rate with either a 5 or a 6 numerical score to basically be in the "average" range technically, but my scoring system works a little differently since the sizable majority of what I watch I end up rating a 7, so in practice 7 is actually my average (think it's around 7.3 on my profile now) because I'm already inclined to like at least to an extent what I select to watch in the first place since I read the synopses and just don't start series left and right all willy-nilly and blindly, but tailor them to my interests. So even the worst rated series I've watched would still have at least one positive thing going for it, which is the premise - otherwise, obviously I wouldn't have even watched it to begin with.

So as I said, in actual practice, a "7" is really closer to what I consider "average" but my average is already pretty good, since I'm comparing it to all other not only anime but all the thousands of pieces of media I've taken in over the years. And I generally like the majority of what I choose to watch. So it's not a bad or undesirable trait to be resting closer to the average compared to that media sea.

This is also because I rarely use 4 ratings on here for anime and only have a few 4s, even less so 3s, and only recently just employed my first 2. I've never used a 1.

So the 5s and 6s are more like anywhere from slightly to significantly below expectations and below the average anime I've watched, but usually it's not because they're "mediocre" in the sense that implies too plain or unremarkable with nothing to distinguish them. I usually have strong feelings and opinions about any anime, both positive and negative about its various aspects, so the 5 and 6 "mediocres" are more those which have aspects about them I love and aspects I hate and they're close enough in equal measure to coalesce into that marking. Neon Genesis Evangelion, a series I've rated with a 6, is the prototypical example of this for me. Nothing "mediocre" about it in the sense of being too plain or ordinary or something. Just enough components I love and components I hate combined.

Probably the closest to dead center middle of the road in quality without containing much I either love or hate and therefore being closest to an indistinct offering would be something like Another, which I rated a 5. It goes down like water but offers nothing in the end. Because it's exactly like most American 80s, 90s, and 2000s horror films; fun enough, energetic, and stylistic but devoid of substance, feeling like a paint by numbers formula by its conclusion - entertaining for most of it, but without any real characters and dialogue, ideas concepts and themes, music, or art you can feel driven to get attached to. Formulaic.

Naruto probably. I was never able to get into it seriously. Some moments were good, others were ehh but not bad. I just never felt like it excelled honestly lol

I want to say MHA. I guess it counts, but it dips from goodness to crap, so I dunno if that really counts.

I mean, she was okay, but that's nothing relatable to me. I was always lazy af with my grades and found the perfect balance how to do the minimum, at least, when I was not interested in the subject. So I didn't pay much attention to this side of a character haha.

It's definitely not a feature everyone can relate too, so I understand why many people couldn't relate with her.

A lot of shounen shows are borderline average, but the one that stands out most in mediocrity in recent times was the first season of Fire Force. The animation and sound were good, but the plot was very generic and the characters at that point could be fit into cookie-cutter tropes. Couple that with awkward pacing and jokes and you had yourself a very average show overall.

One punch man season 2, the animation is very mediocre and it does nothing with ONE's great writing. Even not comparing it to season 1 or the manga, it's still extremely forgettable.

seeing as season 1 is the prologue and the main story hasn't even begun yet, i can see why you would call kami no tou mid. All imma say is that there's a reason why the kami no tou webtoon is second only to solo levelling on mal, (yes it has a much higher rating than god of highschool and it honestly deserves it)

Magi and mirai nikki, both are hella overrated (magi is much better tho) mirai nikki is that anime that is trying to be super edgy for no good reason(and it's not a good look) and magi a a pretty bang average fantasy anime that gets way more recognition than other fantasy anime for whatever reason. overhyped.

-Soul Eater NOT (it's in the title, but I wasn't expecting it to that degree)

Several shows I rated 4-5, like Grand Blue, Madoka Magica, most of Attack on Titan, 90 percent of romance anime.

I think the anime I find the most mediocre is The Devil Is a Part-Timer. There isn't anything about it I actively dislike, but I just found the whole thing unremarkable in story, humor, and characters.
